What is Folk Culture?

Folk culture is the past lifestyles handed down. Folk culture is more involved with race and ethnicity. Such as Tejano music is passed down through the Hispanic culture.

What is Mass Culture?
Mass culture is often referred to as a commercial culture. Mass production for mass consumption.
It is not limited to just one ethnicity, it is something that all of America does.
Mass and Pop culture are some what familiar, because it seems that they influence all types of people.

Folk Culture includes:

dances
handicrafts
art work
music
food

6/9/11What is Pop Culture?Pop culture is much like mass culture, however with pop culture the ideas, styles and attitudes change with time. Things like the clothes we ;wear, the things we say seem more pop culture. The way people dressed and spoke are included.

For Example:
In the 70's the word was "groovy"
In the 80's rock n' roll was the style

Pop Culture changes constantly and occurs uniquely in place and time. Pop culture is said to be the authentic culture of the people as well as permeate the every day lives of many people.

Another example can be Paris Hilton and how her clothes and style are used by the mainstream people.

Rituals of solidarity:

Dallas Mavericks NBA world champions.

Fans dress up and paint their faces with the colors of the team to create a more solid representation of their team and how they are representing for their team.

The ritual such as cheerleading, fan singing songs, marching bands, and parades take place during the games. Since the mavericks won they get to show off their trophy in their city with fans. The fans and players share a common identity.

Just like religion, regalia help participants maintain the illusion of difference between opposing franchises.

Rituals of Rebellion
These are commonly seen in the entertainment industry. There are several shows out there were people swap lives with others for a given period of time. One example of this is the show Worlds Strickest Parents. This show has unruly children sent off to live with another set of parents to learn to behave. Another example of rebllion rituals would be children in the United States dressing up in costumes for Halloween.

Rituals of Public Reflection
This is basically Hollywood in general. The way people look, act, dress, live. Movies provide a great example for public reflection because usually every movie is meant to make people feel a certain way and if it is a good movie it most likely will. Celebrities baby photo's are also an example of this because people become obsessed with seeing the pictures.

As we investigated in class about Rosita Fernandez, nevertheless as part as she being The First Lady of San Antonio a bridge at the river walk was named after her. Rosita donated her talent and time to the annual festival “Fiesta Noche del Rio”. It is something very special to have a bridge named after someone in the river walk. By her performance in the river walk they also established a plaque that said, “Interpreter of songs that have helped edify the communication between the cultures that make San Antonio such a great place to live in.” Millions of people visit the River Walk each year bringing different cultures together. There are numerous things to do at the River Walk such as; fifty restaurants, bistros, cafes, clubs, bars. All of these places go from a Tex Mex style to a haute cuisine and locally-owned spots as well as popular international names like The Hard Rock Café.

Pop culture
Miss Congeniality, some parts of the movie were shot at The Alamo and the River Walk. To me the River Walk is like a place where certain important events take place. In this case it was a beauty pageant and Rosita Fernandez was also a beauty and she was someone famous.

Interpretive Communities:

Made up of a strange mix of music industry executives, newspaper journalist, and musicians from Twisted Sister lead singer Dee Snider to experimental rock guitar etc...

Culture Wars such as

Interpretive communities are those that contest the popular culture community. There are several ways for example like in the music industry the people who are contesting music from some heavy metal rock groups and looking for ratings on this music are interpretive communities

33. Culture OmnivoreA Culture Omnivore is a person who consumes art from a wide variety. For example many people who live in the west have art, statues, pottery and masks from other cultures such as African American or Native American. They may also have art that has landscapes from the past or present of foreign countries. They may also attend culture events like operas, Jazz or Plays that depict other cultures.

36. Bohemian
is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, with few permanent ties, involving musical, artistic or literary pursuits. In this context, Bohemians can be wanderers, adventurers, or vagabond. For example the new pop art shown was seen as unconventional and wandered away from the traditional photograph like art. This is the opposite of Bourgeoisie.

39. Postmodernism
This is a good mix of old and new. For example you may go to a newer part of your town or city, but the architect looks old and outdated. You may also see this in the movies where you can see the new release of Austin Powers, but the film takes place in the 70’s.

Code-switching refers to this ability to negotiate among multiple and varied cultural worlds simultaneously as code-switching a social dexterity famously illustrated by rapper Jay-Z, who moves easily between underground hip-hop clubs and the executive suites of Def Jam Recordings, having served as its president and CEO. Another example could be; Rose, the Titanic heroine played by Kate Winslet who smoothly transitions from elegant dining to Irish dancing below deck.

Authenticity can refer to a variety of desirable traits: credibility, originality, sincerity, naturalness, genuiness, innateness, purity, or realness. Authenticity connotes legitamcy and social value, but like honor itself it is also a social construct with moral overtones rather than an objective and value-free appraisal. Authenticity can never be authentic but must always be performed, staged, fabricated, crafted, or otherwise imagined.

Hybridity: Otherwise disparate cultures are melded together in a self-conscious manner to generate new possibilities for creative expression. This is where several different cultures are all blended together to form one new type of culture.

Bourgeoisie: This term refers to the lifestyle of many American's. This term is often identified with social class as well as conspicous consumption and material status.
